Kuching to host World Toilet Summit next month

KUCHING: The 15th World Toilet Summit and Expo will be held here from Oct 27-29.

Hosted for the first time in Malaysia, the event is organised by Kuching South City Council (MBKS), with support from the state government and Sarawak Convention Bureau.

MBKS mayor Datuk James Chan Khay Syn encouraged everyone who wanted to learn more about sanitation and health to attend the event at Imperial Hotel.

“The event is more than just about toilets. With the theme of `Happy Toilet, Healthy City`, the topics will benefit people who live in this city and other places in the state and country.

“In essence, the theme gives the impression that if the city is progressive in cleanliness and sanitation, then it will definitely be coined a happy and healthy city, which is good for the people to live in,” he told reporters at his office yesterday.

Chan pointed out that toilet cleanliness could bring positive impact to tourism and businesses, noting that toilets in coffee shops tend to be problematic.

“Many started the day clean, but as many people use the toilets they tend to get dirty.

“We will keep educating and creating awareness about toilet cleanliness. We will intensify efforts towards the event,” he said.

He added that he is quite satisfied with the public toilet standards in MBKS areas, saying that they have been well taken care of and citing examples of toilets that have won international and national awards.

Further on the event, Chan said there would be international speakers from all over the world, including representatives from United Nations and World Health Organisation.

MBKS will invite schools and non-governmental organisations to attend the event so that they can benefit from the topics that will be presented.

In addition, 20 Contractor Continuous Development Points will be awarded to contractors who attend the summit, six Continuing Professional Development Points to architects and five Continuous Education Programme Points to safety officers by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health, Human Resources Ministry.

The World Toilet Summit and Expo is held in conjunction with World Toilet Day and it provides a unique global platform for researchers, scholars, sanitation experts, corporate players and NGOs to come together to share and exchange knowledge and information.

The topics that will be discussed include Global Sanitation Crisis; Government and Policies; Education and Health; Challenging Taboos and Making Sanitation Sexy; Rural Sanitation; Urban Sanitation; Gender, Hygiene and Sanitation; Sanitation Development in Malaysia; and many others.

There will also be many international and local sanitation-related companies exhibiting their products.
